My name is Manpreet and I am a practicum student attending City University, with a student membership with BCACC. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and currently am completing my masters degree in counselling. My approach to counselling is very person-centered with elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and solutions focused therapy (SFT). In working with trauma-related concerns I lean towards dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), trauma focused CBT (TF-CBT), and mindfulness based somatic work. I aim to combine work from various modalities to find what works best for you.

As a therapist, my goal is to create an environment where you feel safe and comfortable sharing your experiences with me. I look forward to working with you!

I hold a Master of Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. I have worked as a medical doctor in Amsterdam in various settings including long-term psychiatric care, substance abuse withdrawal management, and the public health sector. I have closely worked with vulnerable population groups, in particular individuals struggling with addiction issues, sex workers, homeless individuals, and the survivors of sexual abuse and intimate partner violence. I am passionate about supporting individuals struggling with anxiety, grief, substance abuse, and traumatic experiences. I believe that great counsellors are genuine, compassionate, possess an ability to hear, and not just listen, to what is being said and the unspoken, and are client empowering.

I am drawn to an eclectic approach and believe that the therapy should be tailored according to clients’ needs. In addition to my private practice, I co-facilitate the support group for Punjabi speaking women at the Moving Forward Family Services. Spending time in nature and listening to soothing music are my favourite leisure activities.

I have around 8 years of experience working as both a psychiatric nurse and a counsellor. I had the privilege of supporting people from various backgrounds such as: domestic violence, sexual assault, developmental & complex trauma, grief & loss, chronic illnesses and individuals exploring their identities and sexual orientation. Having lived in three different countries, I value greatly cultural influences & your own family constellation. While working together, you will find me using an eclectic approach so I can honour and hold all parts of you with reverence. Some of the modalities I use are Somatic experiencing, IFS, ACT, EFT, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Narrative and Existential therapies.
